Callus

Callus: What is it?
Callus is a patch of thickened skin that might have a yellowish tint. Although it can happen anywhere on the foot, it usually happens on the heel.

Why do calluses form?
Poorly fitted shoes, excessive walking or jogging, and high pressure over bony areas are some of the causes of callus formation. But for no apparent reason, some people naturally produce excessive amounts of callus.

How do I proceed if I have callus?
You should schedule a consultation with Greater Manchester Foot care if you have callus formation.

Callus Treatment
Your podiatrist will use a scalpel blade to reduce callus during a treatment session. The goals of this painless procedure are to minimise discomfort, return the skin to its natural state, and enhance skin function.

Callus is a sign of underlying issues, self-treatment should only be tried after a podiatrist has diagnosed the underlying condition and given guidance on how to effectively manage it.

Over-the-counter callus medicines may temporarily treat the callus but may not stop the issue from re-occurrence.

Management of Callus includes:

  • A comprehensive evaluation to identify the callus’s source and the application of a management or treatment strategy.
  • The management strategy could include: guidance on fitting shoes; maintenance appointments to maintain callus reduction; and usage of cushioning to avoid pressure.
  • Providing Foot orthotics or supports to reduce pressure beneath the foot.
  • Seeing a podiatrist for callus care is particularly crucial for people with diabetes or impaired circulation.
